Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab Province (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh was a distinguished economist and statesman. He completed his education at Panjab University and furthered his studies at the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford, earning a doctorate in economics.
Dr. Singh’s career was marked by significant contributions to India’s economic landscape. As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 under Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, he was instrumental in implementing economic reforms that liberalized the Indian economy, steering the country through a severe financial crisis.
In 2004, he became India’s 13th Prime Minister, serving two consecutive terms until 2014. His tenure was characterized by notable economic growth, social welfare initiatives like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), and significant foreign policy achievements, including the Indo-US nuclear deal in 2008.
Dr. Singh’s leadership was marked by integrity, humility, and a commitment to inclusive growth. His economic policies and reforms have left an indelible impact on India’s development trajectory. He is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and their three daughters.
